The Bottom Line Texas Passes Universal School Choice

Originally published at Independent Women's Forum

Education freedom continues to sweep our nation state by state, and this week, the number of children who will no longer be restricted to their residentially assigned district public school grew by leaps and bounds.

Very early Thursday morning, by a vote of 85-63, the Texas House passed Senate Bill 2, bringing universal school choice to the Lone Star State.

With Governor Greg Abbott’s signature, Texas will become the 16th state in our nation to enact universal school choice into law — making more than 50% of children in America eligible for school choice! That number was less than 1% just four years ago.

When it reaches my desk, I will swiftly sign this bill into law, creating the largest day-one school choice program in the nation and putting Texas on a pathway to becoming the best state in America for educating our kids.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott

Last year, TIME recognized Governor Greg Abbott as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. The governor’s extraordinary leadership was paramount in this collective work to make education freedom a reality for Texas families.

Texas will join these states with statewide education freedom for families:

West Virginia ✅ Arizona ✅ Iowa ✅ Utah ✅ Arkansas ✅ Florida ✅ Indiana ✅ Oklahoma ✅ Ohio ✅ North Carolina ✅ Alabama ✅ Louisiana ✅ Tennessee ✅ Idaho ✅ Wyoming ✅
