We advocate for legislation that protects parental rights in public schools. Parents Bill of Rights legislation is of critical importance because children belong to parents — not school personnel — and must be regarded accordingly.
What makes the legislation necessary is the extreme lengths public schools have gone to advance a far-left political agenda in K-12 classrooms. Aware that parents don’t want their children exposed to radical teachings, policies, and practices, schools have worked in secret from parents.
Not stopping at withholding information from parents, public schools too often seek to drive a wedge between students and parents by striving to convince students they are the adults who know better than their parents. Some go as far as to portray parents as the enemy, while those teachers assure students that they are the ones looking after the students’ best interests.
For too long, K-12 public schools have been viewed as the only experts when it comes to educating children. What should be a partnership between the home and school — with parents having ultimate authority over their children’s learning — has been pushed aside under the guise that professional educators actually know best. The National Education Association — the largest and most powerful teachers union in the world — tweeted last November: “Educators love their students and know better than anyone what they need to learn and thrive.”
Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s moms and dads who have been with their children since birth and clearly understand what’s in their best interests. And, it’s moms and dads — not teachers, no matter how beloved — who remain in their children’s lives long past each school year.
The value of parents in the education process has been minimized and, in many cases, removed. While the notion that schools know best has taken root for decades, public education bureaucrats, teachers union leaders, and their political allies have doubled down in recent years. And teachers have followed suit.
Too often, it is more than a matter of parents not being viewed as essential assets in their children’s education — they literally aren’t welcome. In 2023, the largest teachers union in the world, the National Education Association, released a video from their annual representatives assembly on their social media channels showing teachers holding signs that read : “Keep your nose out of my classroom.”
Parents are ultimately responsible for their children’s education and must be empowered as the most important voice with decision-making authority concerning their minor-aged children.

Under this policy, staff are required to affirm a student’s stated gender identity in all aspects of school life — including names, pronouns, use of facilities, and records privacy. The plan explicitly allows students to exclude their parents from being notified or involved if the student chooses. Although the policy’s stated goal is to promote equity and safety for LGBTQ+ students — a goal many support — it also means parents may remain completely unaware of major developments in their children’s identities and experiences at school. While the bill is promoted as a compassionate and practical response to crisis situations, its underlying structure threatens to undermine core parental rights and expose children to an array of unintended risks if left uncorrected. Central to AB 495’s mechanism is the Caregiver’s Authorization Affidavit. Under the proposed law, any adult could submit this affidavit, checking a box to state they … American Center for Transforming Education June 5, 2025 1 Higher Education The Texas legislature has passed a bill giving the governing boards of Texas public universities more oversight responsibilities. Last week, President Trump issued the “Expanding Educational Freedom and Opportunity for Families” executive order. According to a White House fact sheet, the order “recognizes that parents, not the government, play a fundamental role in choosing and directing the upbringing and education of their children.” The executive order states that within 60 days, “the Secretary of Education shall issue guidance regarding how States can use Federal formula funds to support K-12 educational choice initiatives.” It also “directs the … Keri D. The end of Cardona’s tenure couldn’t come soon enough. K-12 student learning achievement is pitifully low. Chronic absenteeism has skyrocketed. Condoned college campus protests are a disgrace. Federal student aid, including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (known as FAFSA) form and process, is a mess. Despite four catastrophic years, Cardona released a glowing report last week. It boasts about the U.S. Department of Education’s “accomplishments” under his watch and opens with a full-page letter from the secretary. “This report, The Impact: Fighting for Public Education, is about more … Keri D. Weingarten pledged: “The AFT has 1.8 million members—including 450,000 in battleground states. Between now and Election Day, we’re going to give our all to make sure our voices are heard and our members are mobilized. Because when we fight, we win.” No question, Weingarten is a fighter. She fought to keep schools closed, which spanned three school years in some states. However, election night was far from a win for Harris, losing in a landslide to former president Donald Trump, who will become the 47th president of the United States in …
