Historic Advancement of Education Freedom

In January, Discovery Institute Senior Fellow and American Center for Transforming Education Director Keri D. Ingraham participated in the important School Choice Roundtable at the White House during National School Choice Week. That event marked one of many in which the White House has recognized Ingraham’s significant contributions toward advancing education freedom.

Following the event, the White House released a short video featuring Dr. Ingraham.

Fast forward eight months and incredible progress has been made.

In March, Dr. Ingraham wrote, “The department has overhauled operations — cutting nearly half its staff, reducing administrative layers, and consolidating offices. Grants have been streamlined, programs merged, reporting reduced, and oversight of the $1.6 trillion student-loan portfolio shifted to a more capable agency.”

In June, in The Daily Wire, Ingraham explained:

Contrary to naysayers, returning education to the states does not mean abandoning students or weakening essential protections. It means acknowledging a fundamental reality: states, local communities, educators, and parents are far better positioned than federal bureaucrats to make decisions about education. It also requires a serious reorientation of government — one that prioritizes students over systems, directs resources away from bureaucracy and toward classrooms, and ensures responsibilities are carried out by the agencies best equipped to deliver results.

As education returns to the states, more parents than ever before will be empowered with school choice for their children. The nation’s historic Federal Tax Credit Scholarship, also called the Education Freedom Tax Credit, takes effect on January 1. Already, 30 states are set to participate, and more states are on the way. And it’s not just Republican governors opting their states in. Colorado Governor Jared Polis and New York Governor Kathy Hochul both opted in, so students in their states will be eligible to receive education scholarships.
