Springtime for Israel
How Israel's Rise Reshapes Mideast GeopoliticsPlease join us on Thursday, June 20 for a captivating discussion on the current state of Middle East geopolitics, as Israel prepares for a new election, and how it will affect the United States with Discovery Senior Fellow and foreign policy expert John Wohlstetter.
President Trump’s first year saw the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Six-Day War–and also of the U.S.-Israel alliance. His second saw the 70th anniversary of Israel’s 1948 birth as a Jewish state, and the 25th anniversary of the 1993 Oslo Accords. In his third year President Trump formally recognized Israel’s 1981 annexation of the Golan Heights.
There may be some changes afoot in the Middle East. As Sunni states in the region ally against Iran, they have also become increasingly intertwined in the Israeli economy; the current administration in the White House is far more pro-Israel than the previous one; and the Israeli elections earlier this year suggest that both Israel’s leaders and voters are committed to a more hard line approach towards the Palestinian conflict as a result of the Palestinian Authority’s and Hamas’s unwillingness to negotiate.
Many of these developments have been made possible by Israel’s rise as a global power. The result of the 2020 presidential elections could prove crucial to the status of an Israeli-American relationship that has been mutually beneficial for both countries.
