Hurricanes, Climate Change, and Statistical Sleight-of-Hand

Doomsayers wasted no time identifying the destruction wrought by Hurricanes Helene and Milton as “proof” of climate change. It is the latest example of an increasingly common phenomenon: attributing individual weather events — a flood in Vermont, a heatwave in the Pacific Northwest, a cold snap in Texas, and many others — to climate change. Now Let’s Get Rid of the Income Tax

Presidential Candidate Donald Trump recently floated the idea of getting rid of the Income Tax completely. I think this is a great idea — and so did the Founders themselves, who effectively barred Direct Taxes in the Constitution, including the Income Tax, until it was legalized in the Sixteenth Amendment of 1913. Before 1913, there was no Income Tax in the United States. Read More ›

Inequity and Iniquity in Manhattan Housing

In 2015, the May 15 cover of New York Magazine ran this headline: “New York Real Estate Is the New Swiss Bank Account: Foreigners are flooding the market to stash, hide, and sometimes launder their money.” That intrigued me, because I had done some research into Manhattan condos selling for $20 million and up. Seattle Housing Providers Face Millions in Unpaid Rent

Affordable, subsidized housing in Seattle is in crisis. Several months ago, the City of Seattle announced $14 million in one-time funding intended to stabilize affordable housing providers. The Office of Housing received 24 applications requesting roughly $22 million. These 24 housing providers own and manage 10,200 affordable housing units across the city, and a public records request for their applications reveals just how dire the future of affordable housing in Seattle is. Why Columbus Day Remains a Foundational American Holiday

Seen within the big picture, Columbus Day is worth keeping and honoring as a great American holiday because it remains foundational to the establishment of a new nation by people who largely shared his qualities of character: self-made, adventurous, and reverent toward God. Read More ›

The Homeless Mascots of “the Anointed”

Sowell wrote that homeless individuals often became "mascots of the anointed." Sleeping-on-the-streets miseries "enable the anointed to score points against a benighted society." Sowell wrote about requests that homeless advocates receive: "We need a witness for a hearing. Can you get us a homeless family: mother, father — father out of work in the past four months from an industrial plant — white?" Read More ›

Elliott’s “Invisible Child”: A Model of Narrative Non-Fiction

Sixty-six books have won the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction since that award began in 1962. Two of the books — sociologist Matthew Desmond's Evicted (the 2017 winner) and journalist Andrea Elliott's Invisible Child (2022 Pulitzer) — portray people in and out of homelessness. I criticized Desmond's work last month: He communicated an unmodulated despair. Last week, though, I recommended E. Fuller Torrey's American Psychosis, and this week I want to recommend Invisible Child's nuanced hopefulness. Read More ›
