Could Blaine be a stop for a new commuter train?
While Amtrak serves Whatcom County, the end of the line for commuter rail is currently the Sounder in Everett.
The Discovery Institute's Cascadia Center for Regional Development, a Seattle-based non-profit group, is conducting a study on the possibility of extending commuter service all the way to the Canadian border.
“Back in 2005, there was a similar study that indicated that additional commuter-type service between Everett and Bellingham was feasible to connect to the Sounder commuter train in Everett and supplement the Amtrak Cascades service between Seattle and Vancouver,” said Bruce Agnew with the Cascadia Center research team.
“This is simply an extension of that work to include Blaine.”
Agnew said the Center’s plan is to hold a meeting in Blaine next month.
A new train coming to Blaine could lead to preservation of the city’s historic depot.
