James Barham is a historian and philosopher of science, originally from Texas. He holds a BA in classics from the University of Texas at Austin, an MA in the history of science from Harvard University, and a PhD in the history and philosophy of science from the University of Notre Dame. He is the author most recently of The Emergence of Freedom: The Sciences and the Human Spirit After Darwin.
During his time at Harvard, Barham was awarded a Sheldon Traveling Fellowship to study at the University of Athens and served as a Visiting Fellow at the Byzantine Institute of the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences in Belgrade. His research focuses on the conceptual underpinnings of biology. His scholarly work has been featured in several academic journals, including BioSystems, Rivista di Biologia, and Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences.
