When Politics Holds Science Hostage

As Klinghoffer points out, the simple fact of the matter is that adult stem cells are proven to heal, while embryonic stem cells are not. Too bad the favored narrative bars this knowledge from the discussion.

Tennessee Academic Freedom Bill Backed by Scientists

Tennessee House Bill 368 will move to a vote by the House General Subcommittee of Education after expert testimony from scientists and educators who expressed their concern that students need to learn more about science and develop critical thinking skills. Among those who testified in favor of the bill were Ph.D. biologist Robin Zimmer, Executive Director of Center for Biomedical Research in Knoxville, and Harold Morrison, a recently retired biology teacher with 30 years experience teaching evolution in public school biology class. Dr. Zimmer has an op-ed today in the Tennessean supporting the bill’s efforts to promote critical thinking, something he sees as necessary for good science education: Mr. Dunn’s timely amendment (HB 368) offers an improvement in our

World Magazine Reports on the David Coppedge Case

World Magazine has an excellent report on the David Coppedge story with new insights into his background — and new reason to do something about the discrimination he’s suffered. About 14 years ago, Coppedge, now 59, got a dream job working with computers on the lab’s Cassini mission to Saturn. One of the most advanced outer planet missions in NASA’s history, the satellite has been sending back spectacular images since orbiting Saturn in 2004, after a nearly seven-year voyage. Back in California, where Coppedge worked, he would occasionally offer to loan DVDs about intelligent design to co-workers. “I would only approach people I was friendly with, not strangers” he said. “I tried to be sensitive, and if somebody was not interested,

Playing “Science Says” Is a Political Game

This morning Discovery Senior Fellow David Klinghoffer has a piece up in Human Events detailing the problem with the oft-heard claim, “Science says . . .“ President Obama echoed an often-heard lament when he complained recently that, among Americans, “facts and science and argument do not seem to be winning the day.” According to distressed cultural observers, public ignorance about science is evidenced by failure to accept global warming, “animal rights,” euthanasia and Darwinian evolution. The assumption is that doubting scientists’ claims means you have divorced yourself from reality. Yet steadily accumulating stories from the scientific community itself suggest grounds for doubting that scientists all pursue truth without fear or favor.
