New Educational Guide by Discovery Senior Fellow Patricia Lines

Discovery Senior Fellow Patricia Lines, an expert on homeschooling, has released a new educational guide on integrating homeschooling with public education in ways that benefit both schools and parents.

The guide, Support for Home-Based Education: Pioneering Partnerships Between Public Schools and Families Who Instruct Their Children at Home, is published by the Educational Resources Information Center at the University of Oregon. It is intended for use by state policymakers, local boards of education, and school administrators.

Lines is nationally known for her research into homeschooling and bridging the cultural gap between public schools and parents who teach their children at home. She describes the history of homeschooling, the mutual mistrust that often exists between homeschooling parents and school districts, and how successful partnerships can be built that allow parent-taught children to enjoy certain benefits of the public education system, such as lab space, that also benefit school districts.

Henry M. Levin, director of the National Center for the Study of Privatization in Education at Columbia University, says that “the theme of mutual respect and collaboration is at the foundation of this monograph. I have found it to be insightful, intelligent, balanced, and helpful for guiding public policy on a topic that is often highly contentious.”
