Dave Barber

Board of Directors, Discovery Institute

Dave serves as manager of Bartell-Barber Family Investments, LLC, where he is positioned to locate and acquire additional operating businesses on behalf of his extended family. In that capacity, in 2012 he acquired the assets of Urban Hardwoods Inc., a Seattle manufacturer and seller of live edge slab furniture, and now serves as chairman of Urban Hardwoods, LLC. He serves as co-chairman of Henbart, LLC, a commercial real estate investment subsidiary of The Bartell Drug Company. He also serves as President of the Bartell-Barber Family Council, whose function is to govern business enterprises of the extended family and to work toward the ultimate objective of succeeding those businesses to members of the fourth generation.

Dave has experience in finance, product development, marketing, operations and real estate investment. He served as a construction loan officer for North Carolina National Bank, now Bank of America, Real Estate Acquisitions Partner at McGuire Properties, Charlotte, N.C. and as Director of Real Estate and Development for The Bartell Drug Company. As an entrepreneur, he was founder of three companies -- a land development and homebuilding company, a company to export non-prescription pharmaceuticals to Russia and other republics of the former Soviet Union, and a firm that sponsored real estate investment opportunities on behalf of accredited investors in the Pacific Northwest. Dave was co-founder of Greenwood Technologies, LLC, a company that developed, produced and sold high-efficiency, clean-burning wood-fired home central heating furnaces.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University, he served for nearly 7 years on active duty as a United States Navy Special Warfare Officer. He holds an MBA degree from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Dave has been a member of and contributor to The Discovery Institute since its founding in 1990. He is a former board member of The Seattle Chapter of the Salvation Army, a current board member of The Washington Policy Center, and an active member of the Washington Business Alliance. He is a member of University Presbyterian Church, as well as Telios and C3, men’s Christian fellowship organizations, and Kiros, a Christian businesspersons’ organization. Dave is married to Jean Bartell Barber. They are the parents of three young adults, Evelyn, Hugh and Neal.
