Education expert\napplauds Idaho\u2019s move towards student-centered learning <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recommends a game plan for\nadvancing education reform<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIdaho\u2019s model education legislation is an outstanding step in the right\ndirection,\u201d according to Don Nielsen, former Seattle School Board President and\nauthor of Every School: One Citizen\u2019s Guide To\nTransforming Education.<\/em><\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was referring to the legislature\u2019s work with the Governor to eliminate\nthe cap on the 20 schools that can enter the state\u2019s pilot program for\n\u201cmastery-based education.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/em>Next up Idaho should move\nforward in creating \u2018Institutes for Educational Leadership\u2019,\u201d explained\nNielsen, and added that \u201cThese institutes would have extraordinarily high\nadmission standards, and would be populated with instructors from business,\neducation, and public policy schools as well as leaders from business, the\nmilitary, and current school systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nielsen went on, \u201cI support charter schools, but I also support the\nnotion of allowing innovation to occur in the existing public system, both at\nthe school level and at the district level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nielsen\u2019s book, Every School<\/em>\nwas originally published in 2014 by Discovery Institute, where Nielsen is a\nsenior fellow at the Institute\u2019s American Center for Transforming\nEducation.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have revised Every School and updated it with a chapter dealing with a \u2018Game Plan\u2019 for a state,\u201d said Nielsen. \u201cThe earlier edition dealt with the major issues, but not a plan and now this new edition does both.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
