Owen Barfield’s Children

The Lewis Legacy-Issue 81, Summer 1999 The C.S. Lewis Foundation for Truth in Publishing

C. S. Lewis dedicated The Voyage of the Dawn Treader to Geoffrey Corbett, adopted son of Owen Barfield. When Corbett turned 21 he legally changed his name to Barfield, and in the new Collins edition of the book his name is given as Geoffrey Barfield. The only catch is that his name was never Geoffrey; it is Jeffrey.

C. S. Lewis dedicated The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to Lucy Barfield, adopted daughter of Owen Barfield. As a very young adult Lucy, a dancer, was crippled by multiple sclerosis. After about 40 years of MS she is still bright mentally; but she is permanently hospitalized and can do no more than hear and move her eyes. She has been tube fed for two years.
