Conference in Milan: “Clive Staples Lewis critico della Modernita.” On Saturday, December 11, 1999 the first Italian C. S. Lewis conference took place. Most of the speakers were Italian, but there were two from Oxford: Andrew Paul Cuneo, President of Oxford University Lewis Society, spoke on “The Principle of Hierarchy in C.S. Lewis,” and Walter Hooper gave the keynote address, “Lewis and the Poison of Subjectivism.”

Shortly before Valentine’s Day 2000 two handwritten C. S. Lewis letters were evaluated on the BBC Television program “Antiques Roadshow.” (The program took place in Grantham, the birthplace of Margaret Thatcher.) The daughter of an Oxford graduate brought two handwritten letters that her father had received from Lewis. The one three pages long was appraised at 1500, and the one five pages long was appraised at 3000. She also had a 1963 postcard from J. R. R. Tolkien that was appraised at 500.

Alabama attorney Norman Jetmundsen Jr has published The Soulbane Strategem (John Hunt Publishing, 1999), about an American student in Oxford who becomes the subject of letters from Soulbane, a junior devil, to a senior devil named Foulheart. Jetmundsen was an American student at Magdalen College, Oxford, in the early 1980s, and one day when he was walking across the street there he got the idea for this book.
